Asthma

What Is Asthma?
Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition characterized by inflammation and narrowing of the airways, leading to symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath.

Precipitating Factors of Asthma

House dust mite – This is a tiny creature that lives in mattresses and other fabrics around the home

Airborne allergens, such as pollen, animal dander, mold, cockroaches and dusts

Respiratory infections, such as the common cold, cough and chest infections

Physical activity (exercise-induced asthma)

Cold air

Air pollutants and irritants, such as smoke, cigarette smoke and pollution.

Certain medications, including beta blockers, aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen.

Strong emotions and stress even laughing may trigger symptoms

Food preservatives

Gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD), a condition in which stomach acids back up into your throat

Menstrual cycle in some women

Certain food items

Diagnosis is made by clinical history, physical examination, Lung Function Tests.

Lung Function Tests: These tests help measure how well your lungs are working. The most common lung function test for asthma is Spirometry. During this test, you’ll be asked to blow into a device called a spirometer, which measures the amount and speed of air you can exhale. This helps determine if your airflow is obstructed, which is a hallmark of asthma.

What is Peak Flow Meter?

Peak flow meter is a small handheld device, to measure how fast you can blow air out of your lungs. It helps monitor changes in airflow and can be useful for tracking asthma symptoms and assessing the effectiveness of treatment, exactly like measuring blood pressure in hypertension and blood sugar in diabetes.

Treatment

Treatment usually involves medications like bronchodilators to relax the muscles around the airways and corticosteroids to reduce inflammation. Management also includes avoiding triggers, monitoring symptoms, and having an action plan for flare-ups.

Long-term control and monitoring are crucial to prevent severe asthma attacks, which can be life-threatening. Regular check-ups with a healthcare provider are essential for managing asthma effectively
