Influenza

Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is another viral respiratory illness, but it’s caused by influenza viruses rather than rhinoviruses. The flu can cause symptoms similar to the common cold, such as fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headaches, fatigue, and sometimes vomiting or diarrhea.

The flu can range from mild to severe and can lead to complications, especially in vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with underlying health conditions. Complications can include pneumonia, sinus infections, ear infections, and worsening of chronic medical conditions.

Like the common cold, the flu spreads through respiratory droplets when infected people cough, sneeze, or talk. It can also spread by touching surfaces contaminated with the virus.

Preventive measures for the flu include getting an annual flu vaccine, practicing good hand hygiene, avoiding close contact with sick individuals, and staying home from work or school when you’re sick to prevent spreading the virus to others.

Treatment for the flu may include antiviral medications if started early in the course of the illness, rest, fluids, and medications to alleviate symptoms. In some cases, especially for those at high risk of complications, healthcare providers may recommend antiviral treatment to reduce the severity and duration of symptoms.
