Bronchiectasis

Bronchiectasis is a chronic lung condition that’s marked by the persistent and abnormal widening of the bronchial tubes(air passages). In individuals with bronchiectasis, the walls of these bronchial tubes sustain damage and lose their natural flexibility. This results in the buildup of mucus and increased susceptibility to frequent infections.

Causes

In most cases, it occurs as a consequence of a past pneumonia or TB which scars the lung. It can also result from severe lung infection in childhood (eg. measles or whooping cough) which causes damage to the airways.

Bronchiectasis can also be caused by genetic conditions, including cystic fibrosis, immune system abnormalities, and breathing hazardous substances. It is intriguing that the cause is sometimes unknown.

Symptoms

  • Chronic cough with lots of mucus
  • Shortness of breath, especially when exercising.
  • Fatigue and weakness.
  • Chest pain or discomfort.
  • Wheezing

Diagnosis

Bronchiectasis treatment usually includes medical history, physical exam, imaging studies (such as a chest CT scan), and lung function testing.

Treatment

Even though bronchiectasis is persistent, treatment can only manage symptoms, avoid complications, and halt disease progression.

Airway clearance techniques: Techniques like chest physiotherapy, postural drainage, and breathing exercises help remove mucus away from the airways.

Medications: Infections can be treated with antibiotics.

Vaccinations: Annual flu shots and pneumonia vaccines are recommended to reduce the risk of respiratory infections.

Pulmonary rehabilitation: The strategy improves lung function and well-being through exercise, breathing, and education.

Surgery: In severe cases or when localized areas of bronchiectasis cause persistent problems, surgical removal of damaged lung sections may be considered.

Bronchiectasis patients should quit smoking (if applicable), eat well, exercise within their limits, and regularly see their best doctors to manage their condition.
